So, the repair person finally got here, ...how did we live without air conditioning back in the days?  An entire 24 hours of heat!

...oh ya, I remember how we survived, ...we sweated alot and we sat outside alot and took every opportunity we could (pool, sprinklers, hydrants, river/lake, movie house, etc) to find coolness.

I love air conditioning ;)

The culprit was a $246 gecko!  I was pleased to find out that it wasn't something more serious, but then again, it was an expensive little lizard!
Somehow it managed to get into the cut-off box outside and, in its wondering, had crossed the terminals and wires.  Fried itself down to only two little back legs and a tail, and completely blew-out the back of the breaker!  It was quite massive damage for such a little thing.  It must also have been the reason for the sparks when I tried to open the box last night.
