One bit of negative news lately,
...well, potentially. I may have hyperglycemia (high blood
sugar). I had a check-up just before the holidays, and my doctor
left a voice message for me about my blood test results the other day.
300+ mg/Dl. The target is
130, so this wasn't good to hear. I have been waiting for this
to happen since I was in my 20s, with Mom and other family members
having diabetes, so I actually feel lucky for making it this long.
Mom is only Type 2 (no shots, just a limiting diet and exercise).
I hope that's the worst of my situation. I hate needles and
schedules!

I'm waiting for after the holidays
to go back to the doctor for further testing, but for now, I bought
one of those finger-pricking blood testers and have been checking my
levels 4-6 times each day for a few days. I don't know why they
advertise these "new" painless testers for the arm or palm. The
little lance for the conventional tester (finger tip) is almost
completely painless.
When I got the test results from
my doctor, he had caught me in the middle of Halloween, birthdays,
Thanksgiving, and the general live-free attitude of this time of year.
It's like a 2-month binge of bad foods and vodka for me from October
through December!
My sugar levels, now that I am
being good for a few days, are dropping from the 200s to the 100s.
Hopefully, I can bring them down to 130 or lower. No needles,
please! I usually eat a fairly healthy diet, with small meals
scattered throughout the day rather than 2-3 big ones. I also
LOVE fish and only eat red meat occasionally.
The bummer are the breads and
cheeses and pizzas and pastas and burgers and dogs and, ...oh dear,
...the vodka ;( I don't drink much, but I do enjoy a good blast
or two each week. I am amazed, now that I'm paying attention to
carbohydrate levels in foods, how bad so many foods are. Even
the "healthy" ones, like fruit and nuts and grains, are saturated with
carbs. Nonfat milk is a killer.
Getting older is absolutely
wonderful mentally, but it absolutely sucks physically! I've
never felt better and more stable (and each year increases) in my
head, but underneath it, my body is disintegrating. |

2007 was truly a great year!
If 2008 is only 1/10th as good, I will be happy, ...very happy!
I suppose the only wish I have for
this year is more travel to Mother Russia. It is nice to find
what makes you happy ;) Maybe this year, maybe next, I will buy
a small dacha (summer home) there. I also hope to learn enough
Russian to start writing poems. I plan to really butcher the
language, Western-style, and thus create my own niche. When I
become famous, the girls will throng to my dacha each Friday night in
the hope that they will be one of the ones I select to spend the
weekend to hear my latest work.
It is nice to find what makes
you happy. It is also nice to have a dream!
All the best to everyone.
Be happy, healthy, and safe! |
